Childsmile
We're part of Childsmile, NHS Scotland's national programme to improve children's oral health and make sure every child can get dental care. Through Childsmile, families get practical advice on toothbrushing and healthy eating, and children can have fluoride varnish applied to help protect their teeth.
Making visits easy
- Bring your child along to your own check-up first, so the practice feels familiar.
- Talk about the dentist positively; we'll do the explaining.
- Book a time of day when your child is usually at their best.
- If your child has additional support needs, tell us in advance so we can plan the visit around them.
Dentists who enjoy seeing children
Dr Kalumba Simumba and Dr Claire O'Keefe both have a clinical interest in children's dentistry, and Dr Kalumba Simumba also has an interest in special needs dentistry.
NHS or private?
NHS dental treatment is free for everyone under 26. Your dentist will always explain the options and give you a written estimate before treatment starts. How NHS charges and private fees work.
Questions people ask
When should my child first see a dentist?
Childsmile encourages families to register children with a dentist from birth. Bring them along once their first teeth appear, or sooner if you have any concerns.
Is children's dentistry free?
Yes. NHS dental treatment, including check-ups, is free for everyone under 26 in Scotland.
What if my child is very anxious?
Tell us. We can take things slowly over several short visits. Inhalation sedation can suit some younger patients who need treatment, after an assessment.
