What we check
Your dentist will look at more than your teeth. At every check-up we:
- check each tooth for decay, wear, cracks and old fillings that need attention
- check your gums for signs of gum disease
- check your tongue, cheeks, lips and throat for anything unusual, including a mouth cancer screen
- take X-rays if they're needed to see between teeth or below the gum
- ask about anything that's bothering you, from sensitivity to clicking jaws
A plan you understand
If anything needs treatment, we'll explain the options, what each involves, and whether it's available on the NHS or privately. You'll get a written treatment plan before anything starts, and you can take time to think.
We'll also agree how often you should be seen. That depends on your mouth, not a fixed rule: some people need a check-up every few months, others much less often.
If you're nervous
Tell us when you book. A check-up is just looking and talking, and you can stop at any time. Many of our anxious patients start with a check-up and nothing else, and we take it from there at your pace. Bearsden is also where we provide sedation, if you need it later for treatment.
What happens
Before you come
Bring a list of any medicines you take. We'll go through your medical history in the practice, never online.
In the chair
Your dentist checks your teeth, gums and soft tissues, and takes X-rays if needed.
Talking it through
We explain what we've found, answer your questions and give you a written plan if you need treatment.
Your next visit
We agree when to see you again and send you a text reminder nearer the time.
NHS or private?
NHS examinations are free for everyone in Scotland. Your dentist will always explain the options and give you a written estimate before treatment starts. How NHS charges and private fees work.
Questions people ask
Is a check-up free on the NHS?
Yes. NHS dental examinations, including review examinations, are free for everyone in Scotland. If you need treatment afterwards, NHS charges may apply unless you're exempt. See our fees page for how NHS charges work.
How long does a check-up take?
Usually a short appointment. If it's your first visit as a new patient, we allow a little longer so we can get to know you and your dental history.
Do you check for mouth cancer?
Yes, a mouth cancer screen is part of every check-up. It's a visual check of your mouth, tongue and throat, and takes a few minutes.
